Memories

I have been giving the matter of what to write about Sarah a great deal of thought as we shared so many things together and I have come up with two memories with which I would like to share with you. The first is when I met Sarah when she joined Southbourne Comprehensive School. It was about two weeks into term in our first year and as Sarah had been in Germany she was a late arrival to our class. Nobody paid her very much attention and she was pretty much ignored. Then, at lunchtime she got her dinner tray and everybody was laughing and talking about her as she smothered her chips in salad cream. Sarah paid no attention and carried on with this ritual for the next few days. Well, by the end of the week everybody was at it. Everyone was exchanging salad cream for ketchup and even to this day I think of Sarah every time I eat chips. Truly delicious-well done Sarah! The second memory I would like to talk about is the time about five years ago when I met up with Sarah at Ealing station after not having been in contact for about fifteen years. I had come to live in Greece when I finished university and started a family over there. We were both worried that we wouldn’t recognize each other as so much time had passed. However, as soon as our eyes met, instant sparks of recognition lit our eyes and Sarah ran over and hugged me. In no time at all we were chatting and giggling as if no time had passed since we had last met. I believe that this is a true sign of friendship. When you haven’t seen someone for so long and when so many changes have happened in your lives it is a true mark of friendship when you can instantly identify with another person because you know them so well. I have uploaded a photograph of this day. I would like to tell you a little something of how it was taken. Sarah’s daughter, Charlotte who was about 2 at the time was having great fun with my digital camera that day. She must have taken about 30 shots of the tops of our heads and our feet. Amazingly, there was also this one perfect photo of Sarah and I together. It is a memory frozen in time and one I have to thank Charlotte for! I am so sad that I will not see Sarah again yet at the same time I am so grateful that we were able to get back in touch and rekindle our friendship. She used to make me laugh so much with her stories about the various men which she met through a variety of dating agencies. She told me about these experiences in such a self-mocking and humorous way that I remember telling her to write a book about them. I am sure it would have been a best-seller as she was extremely talented. She was so honest and so able to understand the characters of other people and talk about things in a witty and entertaining manner. I will miss Sarah greatly but I feel blessed with the time we shared together. The memory of her will be with me forever and I will never forget what a wonderful and unique person she was.
